Black women gospel composers

In many ways the Black church worships the song.

The song is so crucial to the Black church. So much so that it is under suspicion of being worshiped and adored itself, rather than Jesus. The tension between the pastor’s sermon and the choir director’s song is often witnessed in church, as is their inevitable connection.

Black women are the backbone, torso and soul of the church. Yet they are elbowed out of many of its leading roles. So we shouldn’t be surprised that they are not credited much as song writers.

There are a few exceptions. Notably Inez Andrews and Doris Ackers.

This Resonance FM show celebrates some of the women who have dared to cross that invisible musical altar of gospel and religious song writing…
