Segun Adetunji and the Dulcis Ensemble

African music has blessed so many lives. Famous for its percussive rhythms, it also has a recognisable harmonic texture for many of us.

Black musicians are not thought of as classical  musicians. Despite the world’s love of Black music, we are not seen as violin, viola or cello string players. So the African who chooses this path is of great interest to us at Is Black Music.

Enter the Dulcis Ensemble: a collective of twenty young African musicians from Lagos, Nigeria who chose to take this path of African classical music.

Tonight we will highlight one of those incredible musicians. His name is Segun Adetunji and he excels as a viola and violin player.

What is the definition of classical music? As it stands it is a European racist terminology. Separated from its Eurocentric definition, the word classical means ‘representing an exemplary standard within a traditional and long-established form or style.’
